------- Loreto is located in a panoramic setting where the Sea of Cortez meets the desert with the Giganta Mountain in the background.
_____It was here, more than 300 years ago in 1697, that the Jesuit Juan Maria Salvatierra established the Mission of Nuestra Senora de Loreto, the first mission in the Californias.
_____The mission museum, located beside the Nuestra Senora de Loreto Church, contains pieces of this region’s history. To the east of the mission, the central plaza evokes Loreto’s colonial history.
The Sea of Cortez has the largest variety of marine life of any sea in the world. For this reason, oceanographer Frances Jaques Cousteau termed it “the world’s aquarium”.
